Music starts 8:30 p.m.

Here's what the critics are saying about Lone Willy:

"Lone Willy mixes solo acoustic, classic rock and blues with his original songs... He's a mix of high energy dance music mixed with heart-rending

November 20-22nd: Once Upon a Mattress

University Prep presents:
Once Upon a Mattress

On Stage at the Davis Marr Auditorium
2200 Eureka Way, Redding

November 20, 21, and 22nd (Thurs, Fri, Sat)
7:00 p.m.

General admission tickets are available at the door for $10.

Tickets are also available in advance at
Sugerplum Cottage and The Village Schoolhouse.

Here's the Scoop: 42 students from 6th to 12th grade are performing in Once Upon A Mattress, the broadway musical based on The Princess & The Pea.

Here's a little more from
Wikipedia: "Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy that opened off-Broadway on May 11, 1959, and then moved to Broadway. The play was written as an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. The show's music was written by Mary Rodgers with lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. "Once Upon a Mattress" was first written as a shorter play at the Tamiment adult summer camp resort, at which Jack Sydow was present.[1] The play was later expanded for the Broadway stage, Initial reviews of the play were mixed, but critics and actors alike were surprised by the show's enduring popularity."

Thursday, November 20th: The Lonely H

North Star Craft Brewery presents:
The Lonely H
Thursday, November 20th
8:00 p.m.
$4.00 cover charge.
The Lonely H is a young, up and coming
rock-n-roll band from the Seattle area on a national tour.
Check 'em out on Myspace, listen to some of their tunes and drop by the
North Star Craft Brewery on Thursday night, November 20th.
Show starts around 8:00 p.m.
Lonely H My Space page:

Listen to the Lonely H perform Hair on YouTube.

Read more about the Lonely H here on
Obscure sound:
"I suppose you could say that The Lonely H has defied the odds.
Here they are, five kids fresh out of high school,
and they already have a record deal, a debut album,
and are set to embark on a national tour in July
(after they graduate, of course).
In addition, their 2006 debut, Kick Upstairs,
received glowing reviews and the
band has followed it up with no delay.
Their second album,
Hair, is set to be released on July 24th.

The Lonely H’s big break came in 2004 when they finished
in second place at Seattle’s Experience Music Project.
With the prizes consisting of gear and studio time,
the young five-piece set to work on their debut
album with the opportunity of a lifetime in tow.
With sprawling hair down to their shoulders,
tight clothing, and thin frames,
it should come as no surprise that their biggest influences
are the purebred rock ‘n’ roll stars of the past.
Like their fellow contemporaries Kings of Leon,
their admiration for prolifically stylistic frontman
in the vein of Robert Plant or Freddie Mercury is highly evident.
From the photo above, it even looks as if vintage
Plant would slide right in there as well.
If you think that is funny, take a look at the other picture blow.
Looking a bit younger? Mark Fredson’s vocals possess a form
of arena-rock flavor that incorporates itself well with a
squelching twang reminiscent of My Morning Jacket’s Jim James.
With the double guitar attack of Colin Field
and Eric Whitman being further
accompanied by bassist Johnny Whitman and drummer Ben Eyestone,
the natives of Port Angeles, Washington,
brings back what was genuine about rock ‘n’ roll.
In addition to their concisely energetic
guitar progressions and fixated rhythmic response,
The Lonely H provide a plentiful array of hooks
that was merely touched on in Kick Upstairs."

Read more about Berkley Hart in the November edition of After Five Magazine:

"Hailed as masters of both two part harmony and dazzling song craft,
over the past ten years, Berkley Hart have established themselves
as one of the premier acoustic duos touring the country.
In concert the duo shines,
the obvious camaraderie between these two top
songwriters driving each performance.
Add in virtuoso playing from both Jeff Berkley (guitar, percussion)
and Calman Hart (guitar, harmonica) as well as their good natured humor and it’s easy to see why the two have become live favorites.
That said, it’s their acclaimed albums which have racked up the accolades,
each filled with tunes as catchy as you’re likely to come across.
Over their four albums to date, the duo has honed their approach,
experimenting with format and instrumentation, even using a band.
Now the pair has stripped their sound down to the basics,
using only what they can carry, their guitars and their voices

Saturday, Oct 11th: Trail Building Party!

Redding Mountain Biking will be sponsoring another Shasta-Trinity Trail-building party this Saturday, October 11th at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

Meeting time: 8:00 am, Whiskeytown Visitors Center.

What to Bring: Work clothes, gloves, hat, water and a snack. Tools will be supplied.

The Scoop: The final workday of the year for the Shasta-Trinity Trail will be held next Saturday, October 11th.

The meeting time has been moved up one hour to 8:00 A.M. at the Whiskeytown Visitor Center.
The goal for this final trail building work day is to continue the attack up towards the ridge.

Though it's still a significant distance to the top, the National Park Service is hoping one final big push this year will make it possible to complete the entire trail late in 2009 with SCA trail crews working in both directions. If you've attended one of these work days in the past, thanks so very much for your time and hard work. The result thus far is 1 1/2 miles of completed single-track trail travelling through a gorgeous forest. We hope you'll consider joining the crew one last time this year and keep the momentum going strong. Extend the invitation to someone you believe would enjoy the trail in the future. We can accomplish so very much with a large turnout. As always, RSVP if attending to help with the planning. We hope to see you and a friend next Saturday at 8:00 A.M.

This weekend's cool weather forecast will make the work a heck of a lot more pleasant than the 100 degrees and smoky last time out.

And it's a great excuse to get out in the woods and see a beautiful patch of Whiskeytown's high country.

In addition, North Star Craft Brewery will be sponsoring a free pint of beer for each trail volunteer! You'll receive a ticket redeemable at the brewery at the end of the trails work day. ;-)

To RSVP, e-mail

This zany evening begins as the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 fellow sisters. Money must raised immediately for burials! The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show. Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun named Sister Robert Anne, Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina, and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Thursday: La Fin du Monde at North Star Brewery

La Fin Du Monde will be performing tonight, Thursday, September 25th, at the North Star Craft Brewery in Shasta Lake.

Show time: 7 pm to 10 pm

The Scoop: "La Fin du Monde formed in the fall of 2003 in Chico, CA as creative outlet for a group of serious musicians. The result was melodic, dynamic and experimental music that is linear in composition, in that the song is always progressing forward. Often using complex meters, tempo changes and polyrhythms, La Fin du Monde set a standard of always pushing themselves and the song structure without sacrificing the melodic core of the song, resulting in music that is both challenging and memorable....They have been influenced from varied sources such as King Crimson, The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Sunny Day Real Estate, early Pink Floyd, Yes and Tortoise. With one EP and a full length album (Life as it Should Be, 2007) to date, La Fin du Monde have begun touring and continue to keep moving forward." Quoted from my Fin du Monde

You could call him a singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, ethnomusicologist, two-time Grammy-winner or world-class musical collaborator. These titles are all accurate, yet none convey the warmth, humor, soulful essence of Taj Mahal and his music.

Taj has been playing his own distinctive brand of music -- variously described as Afro-Caribbean blues, folk-world-blues, hula blues, folk-funk, and a host of other hyphenations -- for more than 40 years. Caribbean, Hawaiian, African, Latin, and Cuban sounds and rhythms mix with folk, jazz, zydeco, gospel, rock, pop, soul, and R&B, all layered on top of a solid country blues foundation.

What ties it all together is Taj's abiding interest in musical discovery, particularly in tracing many American musical forms back to their roots in Africa and Europe. A self-taught musician, Taj plays more than 20 instruments, including the National Steel and Dobro guitars. His remarkable voice ranges from gruff and gravelly to smooth and sultry.

After more than a decade of playing with larger ensembles, Taj wanted to do more guitar playing with a smaller group. He comes to the Cascade with The Taj Mahal Trio - just Taj on guitar, piano, and banjo, Bill Rich on bass and Kester Smith on drums. Together, these accomplished musicians draw on a 30-year, shared history of Taj's music.
